Storage matters as much as the peptide itself
Even the highest-purity research peptide will degrade quickly if stored badly. The three variables that matter most are temperature, humidity, and light exposure.
Lyophilised (dry) peptides
- Long-term (months to years): store at −20 °C or colder, sealed against humidity. This is how Peptovia Research ships its products.
- Short-term (weeks): a refrigerator at 2–8 °C is adequate.
- Keep the vial sealed until use. Every opening introduces atmospheric moisture that can accelerate degradation of the pellet.
Reconstituted (in-solution) peptides
- Store at 2–8 °C in a refrigerator.
- Use within 28 days for most peptides.
- Do not freeze reconstituted solutions unless the manufacturer's data sheet explicitly allows it — freeze/thaw cycles denature many peptide chemistries.
- Keep away from direct light. Peptides in solution are more sensitive to photodegradation than the dry form.
Cold-chain handling
- Bring vials to room temperature before opening. Condensation on a cold vial introduces water into the pellet.
- After reconstitution, always return the vial to the fridge as soon as possible.
- Transport reconstituted peptides in insulated packaging with a coolant pack if travel exceeds an hour.
What degradation looks like
Signs your stored peptide may have degraded:
- Discolouration of the pellet or solution
- Visible particulates in solution
- Off-odour on opening (unusual for peptides — a strong sign of chemistry breakdown)
- Loss of expected activity in downstream assays
